What is Sports Medicine?

Sport and Exercise Medicine (SEM) includes the prevention and management of sports injuries in elite and recreational athletes, the management of musculoskeletal conditions that affect someone’s day to day life and functioning and the promotion of physical activity to treat and prevent chronic disease.

SEM has been a recognised medical specialty within the NHS since 2005 and its profile within healthcare provision is growing. There is almost no condition that cannot be helped by the right kind of physical activity.

Whether you are an elite athlete, weekend warrior, recreational exerciser or have your day to day physical activities restricted by pain, SEM doctors can help. Only a small percentage of bony and soft tissue injuries ever require surgery, however they do need an accurate diagnosis before a definitive treatment plan can be reached.
